Nov. 17/2002 - 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Imagine walking through a cemetery and reading a tombstone that read: “If only I had spent more time at Work!”. Who of us would not laugh and think it a joke? We all realize that in the end, that, is not what we want to be remembered for. Rather, most of us would be more flattered if our tombstone read: “I’m glad I spent more time at home and with my wife and kids!” Yet, when we take a very close look at our everyday life which tombstone heading would be more accurate for us? Today’s liturgy challenges us to “Think again” of where our priorities lie. Some fundamental questions I should ask myself are: How ensnared am I into the rat-race of consumerism? Is it more important for me to have? Or to be? How am I investing my talents? To build up His Kingdom or our own? How much am I willing to risk for the Lord? Am I a minimalist or someone willing to give it all I’ve got? The upcoming weeks will focus on Christ Our King and His return to judge the living and the dead. The Church in her liturgies gets under our skin and probes us to examine very closely our lives and where our priorities lie. May He find us awake, conscious and diligently doing what matters most in life!
